The Carnival Legend sails roundtrip from Seattle every Tuesday for 7 nights from May 24 to Sept. 6, 2016. She also has one sailing for 8 nights from Vancouver to Seattle on May 16, 2016.

She sails to Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and Victoria on select dates and to Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and Glacier Bay on other dates.

For the most part, passengers are a broad crisscross of Americans; according to Carnival, 30 percent of its passengers are under 35, 40 percent are between 35 and 55, and 30 percent are over 55. Alaska sailings might trend a bit older but not by much. Carnival tends to attract young adults and families looking for an affordable vacation rather than an upscale cruise experience. The company’s primary clientele is based in the United States.

Carnival is known as the “fun ships”. A great cruise for people who want to relax and have fun. Great family experience with Dr. Seuss for kids and game shows for all. Good food in a variety of outlets from casual sushi to fine-dining.

Dress codes are flexible too, and even on formal nights nobody will get upset if you show up in jeans and a sweater. If you want to go super-casual, you can dine buffet-style for every meal, choosing among everything from burgers and fries to burritos, pasta, fried rice and Indian food. You can get pizza 24 hours a day, too, plus sushi, deli sandwiches, and more.

Carnival offers the usual assortment of onboard activities, from traditional napkin-folding classes, Vegas-style revues and kitchen tours to ice carving contests by the pool and dance contests. All of its ships offer size-appropriate spa and fitness facilities and have multiple pool areas.

Carnival is increasingly experimenting with dining venues on its ships. Passengers can choose 6 or 8:15 p.m. and the line has also added Your Time Dining, which allows passengers to eat in the main dining room anytime between 5:45 and 9:30 p.m.

Also available is The Chef’s Table dining experience, which affords a dozen passengers a multi-course dinner with a master chef, a private cocktail reception and a tour of the galley and its operations. This dining option usually takes place in a nontraditional venue, such as the galley or library, and it can be booked onboard at the information desk for a per-person cost of $75.

Carnival currently offers interline rates on every sailing to Alaska. Carnival interline rates are open to commercial and cargo airline employees, parents, retirees and anyone sharing the cabin! The one way itineraries are the ones you want if you have 10 days or more for your Alaska cruise vacation as you can do a land package in Alaska before or after the cruise.

The more popular itinerary with the public is the southbound cruise as it is easier to do the land portion in Alaska first, then cruise, then fly home from Vancouver than the reverse and have to do a red eye back from Anchorage.

As a result the northbound tends to have last minute interline deals more often than the southbound sailings.

Celebrity’s passengers tend to be sophisticated, well-traveled adults, ages 45 and older. Celebrity passengers tend to dress up for dinner — typically button-down or dressy sweaters or jackets and slacks for men and dresses or smart-casual pants for women. Formal night on Celebrity has been replaced by “evening chic” in the main dining room. This means that men can ditch the full suit and tie in favor of a sport coat and collared shirt, with designer jeans. Women can wear cocktail dresses or designer jeans or nice pants. In the buffet, almost any form of dress is allowed except swimwear, flip-flops, spa robes and bare feet.

Sophisticated cuisine and menu options make Celebrity’s dining experience outstanding at this level of cruising. With a high ratio of staff to guests, Celebrity offers personal and intuitive, yet unobtrusive service. The AquaSpa facilities on Celebrity ships are considered some of the finest at sea.

Dress in layers for Alaska. There is plenty of storage in the staterooms, but don’t overpack! Summer time temperatures average about 60 degree temps in most ports, overcast and misty to rainy- but when the sun peeks out- it’s breathtaking! Take a rainjacket, fleece, etc. The cruise through Tracy Arm Fjord is about 4 hrs and 30 something degrees… don’t want to miss the scenery, icebergs, glaciers, etc because you’re too cold to stay on deck!

Shore excursions will vary in cost and content- but there is something for everyone.  Purchase the beverage package and enjoy the option of unlimited choices (up to $12 each) for soda, bottled water, gourmet coffees, teas, wine, beer, mixed drinks, etc is well worth it! Just use the sea pass card for drinks at any bar, restaurant, etc. It’s great to try a glass of wine or cocktail and not have to worry that if it wasn’t to your liking, your drink budget for the day was blown.

The food is high quality and plentiful- everything from pizza and sandwiches to indian, asian stir fry, sushi, turkey and stuffing, pasta bar, burgers, hot dogs, etc in the buffet and outdoor grille. The main dining room meals is excellent, 5 course dinners with choices from escargot, shrimp cocktail, oysters and frog legs to prime rib, roast chicken, lamb, lobster, salmon, etc. Desserts are amazing including the baked alaska in Alaska!
