Airline Museums Around the World
There are a number of airline museums around the world. Some still flying and others for airlines no longer in the air. These museums make for a great day trip or if you have an overnight in the city, a fascinating thing to do during your stay.
American Airlines CR Smith Museum

The American Airlines C.R. Smith Museum is located on the campus of the American Airlines Flight Academy, which is situated at the southern end of DFW International Airport and in close proximity to the world headquarters of American Airlines.
The C.R. Smith Museum takes visitors on a flight through American Airlines history, with interactive exhibits that entice participation by all age groups. The museum features hundreds of historical artifacts, photographs, full-scale aircraft engines and a rare Douglas DC-3 airliner. In addition, the museum’s state of the art digital theater features The Spirit of American, a film, featuring the history of commercial aviation as well as breathtaking aerial photography.

he NWA History Centre was established in 2002 with the mission to preserve and display the memory of Northwest Airlines’ exciting and colorful history. The NWA History Centre is an independent, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization conceived, operated and staffed by current and former employees and retirees of Northwest Airlines and friends of the airline. All donate their time as non-paid volunteers. Income received by the History Centre from memberships, donations and the sale of books and merchandise goes towards furthering the goals of the NWA History Centre.
The History Centre contains “something for everyone” who has even a passing interest in commercial aviation and, specifically, the 13 airlines that comprise the Northwest Airlines family. A handsome collection of airplane models dates from Northwest’s beginning in 1926. Many other unique and interesting artifacts, historical documents and pictures are on display. Contributions have been generous from the people of Northwest, and the History Centre is particularly eager to hear from members of the other 12 airlines in the Northwest family.

The mission of the TWA Museum is to provide information to the public emphasizing the story, history and importance of the major role TWA played in pioneering commercial aviation. From the birth of airmail to the inception of passenger air travel, to the post-WWII era of global route expansion, TWA led the way for 75 years.
The TWA Museum’s goal is to ensure a permanent, expanding and professionally exhibited collection of artifacts that bring the story of TWA to life here in Kansas City, where it all began. The Museum is dedicated to the preservation of the legacy of Trans World Airlines’ leadership in the world of commercial aviation.
Instrument Shop mechanic Tom Perry collected TWA items for many years and displayed them throughout the Trans World Airlines MCI Overhaul Base in Kansas City.
TWA eventually donated a large space for Tom’s collection near the employee cafeteria in the MCI Overhaul Base. The employees built a special case that exhibited his many items. The opening of the TWA Museum highlighted the pride that was and still is typical of virtually all former TWA employees for their company.
Over the years, with the closing of TWA’s Kansas City Administration Center, the St. Louis Training Center and the Overhaul Base all museum items and displays came together at the Kansas City Expo Center. TWA was a major sponsor for the 1996 celebration of the Smithsonian’s 150th Anniversary, and the TWA Museum’s collection traveled to twelve cities over a period of two years as part of “America’s Smithsonian” Exhibit.
The TWA Museum is in the original building that was built in 1931 to accommodate the newly formed TWA corporate headquarters.

Qantas Founders Museum

Visitors to the Museum have the opportunity to experience what it was like to fly an open-cockpit fighting biplane in World War One and compare that with flying the most modern military aircraft in the world today.
Our WW1 Bristol Bf.2b simulator has been custom built and is the only one of its kind in the world.
Our F-35 simulators are designed and constructed in Queensland, and utilize genuine Lockheed Martin software to offer the user a highly realistic experience of flight.
The experience is 30 mins including a 10 minute briefing followed by 20 minutes of flying time, during which you have the opportunity to take off, fly manouvers and make several attempts at landing. It is a half hour experience for $25.00AUS per person but you can book consecutive timeslots for an extended mission.
Has a 1920’s style cafe/restaurant serving delicious breakfast, lunches and a full range of coffee shop delights for morning or afternoon tea. There is also a gift shop offering a full range of souvenirs, Qantas memorabilia, aircraft models including their very own 707 and Avro 504K, aviation books and gifts.
The museum also has four iKiosks, which consist of an iPad in a metal stand, have a unique application which has been developed over months by the Qantas Founders Museum to display a huge collection of pictures, movies, audio and information about Qantas, its’ founders, operations etc. Museums around the world are embracing advancing technology such as these ikiosks to create interactive displays and the Qantas Founders Museum hopes these iKiosks will provide another avenue for visitors to learn about the story of Qantas.
On display at this museum you will find a Qantas 747, 707, DC3, Aero 540K, DH50, DH61 and a Catalina.
The Museum is open daily from 9:00am to 5:00pm (except Christmas Day).

The Trans-Australia Airlines Museum is the only aviation museum dedicated to the preservation of Australia’s domestic aviation development, and formally recognizes all participants in aviation development in this country.
The demise of the name TAA with the name change to Australian Airlines in 1986, meant that the documentation and history of the original airline was to be discarded, and a new identity emerge. For the next 2 1/2 years AUSTRALIAN Airlines would both change and rapidly grow financially, no longer constrained by government restriction.
In 1989 the Flight Staff in the Flight Operations Department went on strike, grounding both major domestic airlines and all airlines affiliated with the Federation. The pilots had resigned en masse, placing the industry in turmoil.
The Government response was to terminate the Pilots employment contracts and engage a new workforce under entirely changed conditions and again many records were discarded. The industry that had survived and worked harmoniously for over 40 years was now totally reorganized.
In 1993, and with government direction, Australian airlines was merged with QANTAS as both were government owned airlines, and this new entity was offered for sale under the new privatization legislation. Again old records were discarded or destroyed
Primarily focusing on TAA and AUSTRALIAN Airlines this collection is unique, and as such is recognized by QANTAS through its support, although it is a private collection.
QANTAS is an acronym for ” Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services “, but Qantas Airways Limited is also known as “The Flying Kangaroo”.
Qantas’ origins were simple, starting in Winton, Queensland in 1920, with a single aircraft, an Avro 504K, purchased for £1425
Japan Airline Museum

Japan Air Lines Co., Ltd. (JAL) opened the Sky Museum inside its maintenance hangar at Haneda Airport in Tokyo.
JAL has completely remodeled the tour course inside the airline’s Haneda hangar. The JAL Hangar Tour at the Sky Museum is open to the public. Inside are aviation-related documents (paper and digital archives) dating back to the airline’s creation in 1951, a 50-meter-long chronological table of JAL’s history, as well as exhibits with cabin crew uniforms and large models of aircraft JAL has used over the years. JAL is also making some materials public for the first time ever in its Special Flight and Imperial Household Flight records. In addition, the Sky Museum has booths set up to present the work performed by flight crews, cabin crews, aircraft mechanics, airport staff, ground staff and baggage handlers. Visitors learn interesting information from tour guides and get the chance to experience some of the work JAL employees perform and try on the uniforms. The Sky Museum also has a walkway leading straight into a hanger where real aircraft undergo maintenance.
The Sky Museum is located at JAL Maintenance Center 1 (Haneda Airport JAL M1 Building, 3 Haneda Airport, Ohta Ward). A typical tour course last 90 minutes: aviation seminar (30 minutes), exhibit tour (20 minutes) and hangar tour (40 minutes). Excluding New Year’s holidays the museum is open daily with tours starting at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Visitors can book tours up to six months in advance through the JAL website. The tour is designed for visitors of at least elementary school age. Admission is free of charge.

The British Airways Heritage collection has existed since the formation of British Airways. It was formed to preserve the records and artifacts of British Airways predecessor companies BOAC, BEA, BSAA and the pre-war Imperial Airways and British Airways Ltd.
The collection comprises of an extensive document archive recording the formation, development and operations of the British Airways and its predecessor companies as well as memorabilia and artefacts.
Over 130 uniforms from the 1930s to the present day are preserved as well as a large collection of aircraft models and pictures.
