Juneau is Alaska’s State Capital with a population of just over 30,000 residents, Juneau offers wonderful sightseeing choices and a wealth of shopping opportunities which makes it a very popular cruise port.
Juneau is in a rain forest and often can be overcast and rainy. Typically there are only 1 to 3 sunny days per week from April to June. You may be lucky and get a dry day in Juneau but you are better off prepared for rain.
The port of Juneau offers berths right adjacent to the downtown area. You can easily walk off the ship to a shop, restaurant or bar.
Juneau offers a wide range of activities, from whale-watching and zip-lining to touring the Capitol building or the Alaskan Brewing Co and of course salmon bakes. The state’s most accessible glacier the Mendenhall is an immense, 12-mile-long river of ice. Along with glacier-viewing, there’s always the chance of seeing a bear or two up close.
Best Shore Excursion when in Juneau? Take the helicopter tour up to Mendenhall Glacier for a landing on the glacier itself.
Also take the Mount Roberts tramway right from the port to the top of Mount Roberts for a fantastic view of Juneau and surrounding mountains. On top of the mountain there are several short trails exploring the forest surrounding the visitor center. Just keep an eye out for bears.
Juneau’s salmon season matches up with the cruise season, so charter a fishing boat for some salmon or other fishing. There are also several float planes that will take you back to some of the interior lodges for a day’s fishing expedition or exploration. Also look for some whale watching boat rides.
Thirsty? Visit the Red Dog Saloon for a drink. Hungry? Head over to the Hanger on the Wharf Pub and Grill Restaurant in the little shopping center on the wharf just north of the shopping. The restaurant is overlooked by most tourists, but is a favorite with locals. If your cruise is in port during the evening be sure to enjoy some Alaskan King Crab legs during happy hour.
Bonus tip – Jun. 18 & 19, 2016 will be the Juneau Gold Rush Days which features logging events, mining competitions, delicious food and other activities that are great for the whole family.
